Despite inclement weather, thousands of people from all walks of life thronged the Surma riverbanks in Sylhet city's Kalighat-circuit house and Chadnighat yesterday afternoon, to witness a traditional boat race.

A total of 12 groups from different upazilas of the district participated in the contest, with nicely decorated racing boats. Spectators standing on the riverbank enjoyed the event while the young boatmen were singing the popular songs of Shah Abdul Karim one after another.

The whole area wore a festive look with hundreds of people cheering with colourful flags on both sides. Besides, a huge audience was seen cheering from the Keane Bridge.

Nine teams received prizes in three groups. Finance Minister AMA Muhith as the chief guest handed over the prizes to the winners.

Bangladesh Rowing Federation organised the event, sponsored by telecom operator Banglalink.
