As part of the celebration of 40th anniversary of Saju Art Gallery, the month-long 33rd Grand Group Art Exhibition at Saju Art Gallery (Gulshan-2, Dhaka) opened yesterday, and will continue till May 18. The exhibition features 127 artworks featuring 87 artists — master, prominent and emerging alike.
Highlights of the exhibit are some avant-garde works by Quamrul Hassan, SM Sultan, Safiuddin Ahmed, Aminul Islam, Murtaja Baseer, Syed Jahangir, Shamsul Islam Nizami, Rafiqun Nabi, Monirul Islam and others.
Artworks of Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, Syed Abdullah Khalid, Abdus Shakoor Shah, Biren Shome, Shahabuddin Ahmed, Jamal Ahmed, Ahmed Shamsuddoha, Sheikh Afzal Hossain, Ranjit Das, Mohammad Eunus, Kanak Chanpa Chakma, Mohammad Iqbal, Anisuzzaman, Rafiq Roni and others are also on display.
The displayed artworks are in varied mediums like oil, pencil and ink, gouache, acrylic, watercolour, prints and more. The themes include scenic and panoramic beauty of the country, Liberation War, Language Movement, traditional folk, several urban and semi-urban dilemmas, varied personal, social and political aspects of the country.
The first Grand Group Art Exhibition at Saju Art Gallery was held in 1977. Over the years, it has become one of the biggest annual art shows in the country.
Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest, while wordsmith Syed Shamsul Haque was present as special guest. Ramiz Ahmed Chowdhury, managing director of Saju Art Gallery, presided over the inauguration.
