TV play director Arif Khan has earned fame with his many acclaimed one-hour TV plays and serials. The Daily Star recently spoke to the director about matters close to his heart:
When did you dream of becoming a drama director?
Arif Khan: To be honest, I dreamt of seeing myself in front of the camera when I was young boy. Following this dream I appeared on stage. At one stage I visited BTV to establish contact with actress Flora Sarkar who was my neighbour. Later, I embarked on a career as journalist and joined the weekly Bichitra. It was then that I began to dream of directing plays.
What was your first programme on TV?
Arif Khan: It was “Jugalbandi” on star couples. I was the compiler and planner of the programme. Later, I did a show, titled “Album” aired on BTV for three years and it became hugely popular. In the meantime, a new trend of package dramas came about and I worked with Faria Hossain and Arun Chowdhury as chief compiler. I started directing TV plays much later.
What was your debut drama as director?
How long have you been in the profession?
Arif Khan: I have been in the profession for the last 10 years. In that span of time, I have made around 50 one-hour plays, several telefilms and drama serials. A serial directed by me is currently being aired on a TV channel.
Tell us about your programme on Runa Laila and Sabina Yasmin?
Arif Khan: “Antartaro Aj Ganer Bhubhone” was aired in association with ntv. I had dreamt of doing a programme on the two divas after the trend of package dramas caught on. My dream finally materialized after the duo agreed to do the project.
On-screen couple Afzal Hossain and Suborna Mustafa performed in your play after a hiatus, how did that come about?
Arif Khan: I had aspired to work with the famed artistes ever since I started my career as drama director. I am certain that every director dreams of working with them. Both are my very close friends. I take it as a great achievement on my part.
