To bid farewell to the previous year and to welcome the new, the students of Fine Arts Department of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU), in Trishal are going all out to prepare for a traditional rally marking Pahela Boishakh, Bengali New Year-1421.
Under the watchful eyes of their teachers, the students are making replicas of pots, dolls, birds, animals and musical instruments at the department premises to add more colour to the traditional procession scheduled to be brought out from the campus in the morning, marking the celebrations.
Talking to this correspondent, student Gautam Devnath said, “We hope to make the traditional procession more flamboyant than previous years.”
Tapon Kumar Sarker, head of the Fine Arts Department said, “Timely preparations for the traditional rally are on.”
Students of the Fine Arts Department will also organise a “Fanush Festival”, lighting lamps and fireworks display marking 'Chaitra Sankranti, the last day of the Bengali Year-1420.
Meanwhile, JKKNIU will also organise a day long programme that will include traditional games and sports, staging of plays by the artistes of Natyakala Department and a cultural function by Music Department of the university.
A committee to oversee the celebrations was formed earlier with Dr. Mosharrat Shabnam, head of Music Department as its convener and Siddhartha Dey of Fine Arts Department as its member secretary.

“A cross section of people from adjacent areas also join the rally every year and that encourages us a great deal,” said Dr. Mosharrat Shabnam.
The vice-chancellor of JKKNIU Professor Mohit Ul Alam said, the day will be observed with a flurry of festivities and celebrations.
“We want to usher in the New Year by shaking off all the unnecessary baggage of the previous year,” said the vice-chancellor.
