Convicted killers roaming freely abroad!
As per a report published in this paper on January 9, four convicted killers, one of them given death sentence, for a murder committed in 2012, never served their sentences and are said to be roaming freely in Malaysia. The incident in question involved members of one faction of Bangladesh Chattra League killing a member of a rival faction at Jahangirnagar University. What surprises us here is that when the accused skipped a court hearing, how is it that they managed to pass through immigration at the airport to fly abroad? These are, after all, fugitives from justice and why wasn't an alert raised by law enforcers when they failed to appear in court?
We understand how trying it must be for family members who have been waiting for justice all these years. It is equally frustrating when they seek answers from law enforcers who are, apparently in the dark regarding their whereabouts. This becomes all the more exasperating when these convicts have no problems posting pictures of having a great time on New Year's Eve on their Facebook accounts.
Where exactly does that leave the victim's family? And what sort of message are we giving out to people in general? That party activists are above the law and crimes committed by them are to be pushed under the carpet. While there may be massive outcry at the time of such a murder, the wheels of justice in the country move at such a snail's pace that allows for convicted criminals to get away scot free. The police have been negligent in discharging their duties and we demand that these fugitives be brought back from abroad and made to face the punishments awarded to them.
