DU suspends 7 BCL men for 'beating up' student
Dhaka University authorities have suspended seven activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling Awami League, on charges of beating up a student on Thursday.
The authorities, at a meeting, took the decision last night and formed an investigation committee to probe the incident, DU acting Proctor Amzad Ali told The Daily star.
The authorities have yet to decide the duration of their suspension, he said.
The suspended students -- Shaheen, Shakil, Ashik, Mehedi, Liton, Mamun and Zafar -- are all residents of the university’s Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall.
Of them, Ashik and Mamun are second year honours students of English department while Shakil, Shaheen, Mehedi, Liton are from philosophy, urdu, public administration and tourism and hospitality management departments respectively.
The name of the department where Zafar has been studying could not be known immediately.
On Thursday, the seven allegedly beat up Al Amin, a first year student of criminology department and resident of Bangabandhu Hall in front of the Teachers and Students Centre (TSC) around 7:30pm on Thursday.
Witnesses said the BCL men beat him up Amin indiscriminately following an altercation with him.
The victim's brother later filed a case with the Shahbagh Police Station.
