DU suspends 2 BCL activists
Dhaka University (DU) authorities yesterday suspended two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for torturing a person by confining him to their room at Salimullah Muslim Hall on the campus to extort money from him.
Police also arrested Nazmul Karim, 4th year student of sociology department, and Alamgir, a student of world religion department, on charges of abducting Sohel and torturing him for Tk 4 lakh.
"We will issue show-cause notices to the duo asking them why they will not be expelled," said DU acting proctor Prof Amzad Ali.
Though Nazmul and Alamgir are known as BCL activists, the BCL high ups did not expel the two on the pretext that that the duo did not hold any posts in the organisation, said BCL sources at SM Hall.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court yesterday sent them to jail after police produced them before the court praying for a three-day remand for each.
On Tuesday, the duo picked up Md Sohel from outside the gate of the hall and tortured him allegedly for extorting money.
Sohel claimed that he was waiting on his motorbike at the hall gate as it started raining.
All of a sudden the duo arrived and started assaulting him branding him a drug peddler, he added.
But a police official of Shahbagh Police Station said they had earlier picked up Sohel for his alleged involvement in drug peddling.
He was later released for lack of proof, and no case was filed, he added.
