Don't lease out river lands, minister tells DCs
Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud today asked deputy commissioners (DCs) not to lease out the country’s river lands.
"Keep vigil so that nobody can occupy the river shores," the minister said during a discussion on the concluding day of the DC conference at the water resources ministry in Secretariat of the capital.
“Do not bow down to any political pressure,” he advised the deputy commissioners.
The minister identified population growth as one of the reasons behind the river pollution.
Meanwhile, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan told the DCs that they should take measures to stop the overloading of passengers on the vehicles ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The three-day DC conference began on Tuesday.
