Diplomats for improving Bangladesh-India ties
Diplomats from Bangladesh and India today called for moving forward with a comprehensive economic cooperation and integration among the countries.
They said the two countries in the last six years have improved relations by addressing their security concerns, border management and trade, but India has to take the bigger share of responsibility in building trust and confidence.
Over a dozen of former high commissioners of Bangladesh and India, who have served in Dhaka and New Delhi in the last four decades, also called for developing such a mechanism which will solve bilateral issues automatically through legal framework.
Most of the participating ex-diplomats laid emphasis on ensuring political consensus among both the countries to solidify the ties removing the obstacles.
The senior diplomats, who assembled for a two-day first ever India-Bangladesh High Commissioners’ Summit at the Senate Hall of Dhaka University, emphasised on building national consensus in the two countries to resolve all sensitive bilateral issues.
Department of International Relations and India-Bangladesh Foundation jointly organised the event, which was attended by a large number of retired and serving diplomats, noted economist, academics, media personalities and students.
Inaugurating the summit, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said India-Bangladesh relations have withstood “the test of time”, setting a precedent for other regional countries to emulate.
Turning on the long pending bilateral issues, the diplomats said India should immediately deliver the two vital issues – ratification of Land Boundary Agreement and ink the Teesta River Water Sharing deal, which will further help develop trust and confidence.
