DIG 'tried to save accused'
A deputy inspector general of police tried to influence cops at Dhanmondi Police Station to save murder accused Inzamamul Haq Jisan, complained Shahidul Haq, whose son was slain in the capital last month.
He was speaking at a press conference at the media centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Minto Road in the capital yesterday.
Shahidul claimed DIG Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan of Special Branch of police tried to have Jisan's name dropped from the murder case of his son Ayaz Haq.
“A relative of Jisan, the DIG also tried to take steps so that the accused didn't have to make a confessional statement [before the court],” he claimed.
Ayaz, brother of a Dhaka City College student, was stabbed at Jigatola bus stop following a clash between students of the college on June 9. He later succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on that day.
The DMP organised the press briefing following several media reports in the last couple of days on the alleged torture of Jisan in custody.
Shahidul further alleged that a Bangla daily chief reporter, another relative of Jisan, joined the DIG to save Jisan.
With the help of some policemen, Jisan's family members sent him to the DMCH under false pretence, mentioned Shahidul. “They did this so that they could send him [Jisan] abroad for treatment,” he added.
Contacted, DIG Mosharraf said he had phoned Dhanmondi police once requesting not to torture Jisan in custody and to follow due procedure in investigation.
Shahidul filed a murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station on June 9 naming six, including Jisan, and a few unnamed.
Police that evening rounded up 17-year-old student Jisan of Dhaka City College. He was quite fit when he was arrested, according to the very police officer who allegedly tortured him.
Later, he was taken on nine days' remand from June 10 to 19 in two phases through a local court.
Jisan's family members complained that Sub-inspector Sahidul Biswas and several other cops of Dhanmondi Police Station tortured the arrestee while on remand.
Law enforcers beat him up, gave him electric shocks and repeatedly pierced his left leg with syringe needles. Police even demanded Tk 10 lakh to spare the arrestee the torture, claimed Jisan's father Jahidul Islam.
DMP REFUTES TORTURE ALLEGATION
Speaking at the press briefing, DMP spokesperson Monirul Islam said the allegation of torturing Jisan in custody is “baseless” and “ill-motivated”.
Police quizzed Jisan on remand as per legal procedure, he mentioned.
After landing in jail, the arrestee underwent treatment at a prison hospital for several days. He was admitted to DMCH surgery department on July 1 and later shifted to the burn unit on July 13 for plastic surgery.
National Human Rights Commission Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman visited him at the DMCH on Wednesday.
Talking to journalists after visiting Jisan, the NHRC said a section of law enforcers was abusing power and torturing citizens.
Mizanur called upon the home ministry to probe the incident and bring to book those responsible.
Farman Ali, senior jail superintendent at Dhaka Central Jail, said Jisan was brought to the prison with injuries to his left leg.
