Dharla erosion renders 42 families homeless
Forty-two families at two villages in Sadar upazila in the district have been rendered homeless in the last six days due to the erosion by the River Dharla.
The erosion affected people have taken shelter on the government roads after losing their everything to the river.
The erosion hit villages are Char Kulaghat and Bhatiyapara under Kulaghat union in the upazila.
The victims said that erosion by the Dharla River took an alarming turn here rendering 42 of 130 families at two villages homeless.
The rest of the families are passing days in fear as the Dharla continued to devour homesteads one after another.
A road to the two villages has already been devoured by the river, they said.
Mohabbat Mia, 55, an erosion victim of Char Kulaghat village said, “The river also turned serious at neighbouring Bhatiyapara village. I have lost my homestead, two bighas of cropland and a bamboo cluster”.
“Now I and six others of my family are homeless and living on a government road”.
Azizul Islam, 60, of Bhatiyapara village said, “Besides me, many other people in the village have already been rendered homeless by the Dharla.
Many other villagers are passing sleepless night in fear,” he said.
Kulaghat UP chairman Idris Ali said, although the Dharla erosion at two villages took a serious turn the Water Development Board authorities in Kurigram zone were yet to take any step in this regard.
Contacted, WDB Executive Engineer in Kurigram Zone Abu Taher said they could not start any work to check the erosion for lack of sufficient fund.
We will write to the authorities concerned seeking fund soon, he said.
