Dhaka to have permanent Bimstec secretariat
Bangladesh will host the permanent secretariat of the seven-nation grouping of Bimstec under a key agreement signed today.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed today at Nay Pyi Taw, the administrative capital of Myanmar hosting the third Bimstec Summit, reports our Delhi correspondent quoting an official statement.
The MoU was signed between Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam and foreign ministers of six other Bimstec countries.
The secretariat is expected to start functioning from May this year to coordinate and facilitate the implementation of the Bimstec activities and projects and to service its meetings.
Sumith Nakandala, the first secretary general of Bimstec, will take up his assignment in Dhaka.
Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) comprises of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan and Thailand.
