Derailment halts Ctg-Sylhet train service for 5hrs
Railway communication between Sylhet and Chittagong was halted for about five hours after a train derailed in Akhaura of Brahmanbaria early today.
The power carriage of Chittagong-bound inter-city Udayan Express veered off the tracks in Azampur outer signal near Akhura Railway Junction around 4:30am, said Abdul Motaleb, superintendent of the junction.
After the derailment, the train dragged itself through the railway tracks and reached Akhaura junction in a rundown condition, he added. “The rail tracks were heavily damaged.”
The Sylhet-Chittagong train link was suspended after the derailment, our correspondent reports. However, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chittagong routes were unaffected.
Train services resumed around 9:00am after a salvage train removed the derailed carriage and repaired the tracks, Abdul Motaleb said.
No casualties were reported in the incident, said Nurul Amin, officer-in-charge of the Akhaura Railway Police Station.
