Defamation case against Chumki dismissed
A Dhaka court today dismissed a case hours after it was filed against State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki for branding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia “a worthless leader” and her elder son Tarique Rahman “an impudent person”.
Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman passed the order as he found no cogent grounds for taking cognizance of the charge against the minister.
In his order, the magistrate said the complainant was not a person or a family member against whom the remarks were made by the minister. So, the case was dismissed, the magistrate said.
Advocate Sabina Yasmin Chowdhury Bina, a leader of BNP's women wing Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, filed the case with the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka.
In the complaint, Bina alleged that Chumki made the derogatory remarks against Khaleda and Tarique at a discussion in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur on December 30.
The remarks about the BNP chief and her son were published in different national dailies the following day which damaged the complainant’s political and social image.
