Dalits living in fear of eviction from land
Many people of the Dalit community are living under the threat of being evicted from their land by local influential quarters and the government, said leaders of the minority community yesterday.
They said land grabbers have been eyeing land of the Dalits due to the recent land value hike.
Meanwhile the government has been issuing notices to remove Dalits from khas land where they have been living for many years, they said at a seminar titled “Housing and Land Right: Accessibility and Realities of Dalits in Bangladesh”.
Bangladesh Dalit and Excluded Rights Movement, and Nagorik Uddyog organised the programme at the Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
“We are living like animals in our hut with the fear of being evicted at any moment,” said Dalit leader Moni Rani Das.
“We are victims of discrimination in every aspect of life,” Das added.
At the seminar, the Dalit leaders demanded allocation of khas land as they are landless, and initiatives to mitigate housing problem of the Dalits. Noor Jahan Begum, member of the parliamentary standing committee on the housing and public works ministry, spoke as chief guest at the seminar moderated by Zakir Hossain, chief executive of Nagorik Uddyog.
