‘Criminal’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Bagerhat cops
An alleged criminal was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in the east Sundarbans under Sharankhola range of Bagerhat early today.
Deceased Namir Talukdar, 38, was son of late Sultan Talukdar of Arjunbahar village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila, reports our district correspondent.
Namir was accused in eight cases filed with different police stations of Khulna and Bagerhat for killing, robbery and extortions.
Namir, who used to extort money honey collectors and woodcutters in the Sundarbans, was arrested at Arjunbahar Bazar in Baherhat Sadar upazila last evening, said Kazi Abdul Salek, officer-in-charge of Sarankhola Police Station.
During primary interrogation, Namir told police that he had hidden a cache of firearms on the east bank of Bhola river, OC Salek said.
Police along with Namir conducted a raid in the area to recover the hidden firearms, he said.
Sensing law enforcers' presence, his aides opened fire targeting the law enforcers forcing them to fire back that triggered a 30-minute gunfight.
Namir, a member of criminal gang locally known as Shirsha alias Rezaul Cadres, came in the line of fire and died on the spot, the OC added.
The body of Namir was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
