Zila parishad election fair, peaceful: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed today said the first-ever zila parishad election was held in a fair and peaceful manner.
“An initiative was taken so that influential persons cannot hamper the election as per the electoral code of conduct,” he said at a press briefing at the Election Commission secretariat after the end of the voting this afternoon, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Representatives of all others local government bodies voted the representatives of zila parishad from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in 61 districts across the country.
Today’s election was held as the five-year tenure of the government-appointed 61 district administrators expires this month, BSS adds.
"As many as 63,143 voters, including 14,800 female ones, franchised their voting rights at 915 centres across the country to elect a chairman and 20 members including five in reserved women seats, for each Zila Parishad in a district," according to a source of EC secretariat.
A total of 3,938 candidates - 146 for the post of chairman, 806 reserved women seats and 2,986 general members - contested in the much-talked zila parishad election.
The grassroots leaders of ruling Awami League are about to win most of the posts of the chairman and members as BNP remained out of the electoral race.
