Writ seeks stay on Narayanganj Zila Parishad polls
A writ petition was filed with the High Court today seeking a stay on the process for holding the election of Narayanganj District Council (Zila Parishad) scheduled for December 28.
In his petition, Md Shahjalal, a resident of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj, also sought a stay on the effectiveness of the existing voter list meant for the district council elections.
The mayor and councillors were enlisted in the voter list that expired on November 27, petitioner’s counsel Eunus Ali Akond told The Daily Star.
So, they are not supposed to cast votes to the district council elections, the petitioner claimed.
According to the relevant provision of the law, the mayor and councillors of the Narayanganj City Corporation, who will be elected through the election to be held on December 22, will be included in the voter lists, he added.
The existing voter list for Narayanganj District Council election is faulty, Eunus said.
The HC is likely to hear the petition tomorrow.
