Water body lessee shot dead
Criminals formerly belonging to an outlawed party shot dead a fish farmer and lessee of a water body in Narayankandi village under Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga early yesterday.
The deceased Ziaur Rahman, 39, of the village, was president of Narayankandi Kayetpara Matsajibi Somobai Samity.
Police arrested two criminals allegedly involved in the killing, said Belayet Hossain, additional superintendent of police (ASP) in Chuadanga.
According to the police official, Ziaur had been farming fish in a leased water body for the last one year under the banner of Narayankandi Kayetpara Matsajibi Somobai Samity. Around 23 fishermen were involved in it.
Ziaur had a feud with a number of groups over the lease of the water body, the ASP quoted the victim's wife Firoza Akhter as saying.
“A local gang led by one Oltu, formerly a top cadre of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party Janajuddho, demanded Tk 6 lakh from Ziaur recently,” the ASP said.
The outlaws threatened to kill Ziaur as he refused to pay the money, the ASP said quoting Firoza.
Firoza said her husband went to the water body at night and last communicated with her through mobile phone at around 3:15am, saying that he was returning home. “The criminals shot him dead when he was returning home amid storm and rain,” Firoza said.
Local people found the body of Ziaur at a roadside ditch around 6:00am yesterday. It was sent to Sadar Upazila Hospital morgue for autopsy, police said.
A police team led by ASP Belayet conducted raided at some places in the morning and arrested Abdus Selim, 40, and Robiul Islam, 45, from the same area.
Of them, Robiul of Harinakundu upazila of Jhenidah was identified as a cadre of outlawed Janajuddho, and an accused in a murder case, the ASP said.
