UP polls: Voting ends peacefully in ex-enclaves
Voting in Union Parishad elections in former enclaves in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Panchagarh ended peacefully today.
The voting began at 8:00am and ended at 4:00pm without any major untoward incident.
For the first time in their lifetime, more than 16,000 voters of former enclaves in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Panchagarh casted their votes to elect their local representatives.
Chairmen and members will be elected in each of 22 union parishads in the three districts.
All out preparations hold the elections in around 400 UPs in a peaceful manner were taken. Around 80 UPs will see fresh elections, while re-polling and by-elections will be held to the rest.
Twenty-two of the 80 UPs are located in the former enclave areas.
5 HURT IN CLASH DURING POLLS IN BHOLA
Five people including a woman were injured in a clash between the followers of two member candidates of ward no 2 in Bapta union parishad (UP) after the voting began on Monday morning.
Helal Uddin, the district election officer, said supporters of member candidate Md Faruk attacked supporters of his contestant Maksudur Rahman Nirob 30 minutes into the polling in the morning.
The clash left five, including Nirob’s wife Parvin, injured.
Later, police and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) brought the situation under control.
Voting is underway in four centres in Bhola Sadar and three centres in Daulatkhan upazila.
Earlier the voting was cancelled during the staggered countrywide UP elections due to violence.
Meanwhile, a youth Md Shakil, 17, was jailed for 10 days after he was caught casting false votes in Chandpur’s Faridganj upazila, our local correspondent reports quoting Executive Magistrate Kaniz Fatema.
