Mir Quasem seeks time to decide on mercy petition
Condemned war criminal Mir Quasem Ali has sought time to take decision over seeking presidential clemency.
Proshanto Kumar Banik, senior jail super of Kashimpur Jail-2, confirmed this to The Daily Star.
The authorities asked Mir Quasem about his decision after they read out to him the full verdict of the Supreme Court that dismissed his petition for reviewing its judgment that upheld his death penalty for committing crimes against humanity in 1971.
The copy of the verdict reached the jail at about 1:00am today and the authorities read it out to him around 7:30am, the official said.
Around 10 hours after the dismissal of the plea, a copy of the full verdict was sent to Dhaka Central Jail.
Quasem, widely considered as a top financer of anti-liberation party Jamaat-e-Islami, led ruthless militia Al-Badr in Chittagong to commit crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
The 63-year-old Jamaat leader is now left with only one option -- seeking presidential clemency by confessing the crimes he committed 45 years back.
On November 2, 2014, International Crimes Tribunal-2 handed capital punishment to 63-year-old Jamaat leader Quasem over crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
The Appellate Division upheld the verdict on March 8 this year and released the full text on June 6, hours after which the ICT had issued a death warrant for him.
On June 19, Quasem submitted his petition seeking a review of death.
