Vandalism at Ctg court: Bar Council asked to take action
The Supreme Court administration asked Bangladesh Bar Council, the licencing and regulatory body for lawyers, to take appropriate legal action against the lawyers who were involved with the incident of vandalism at a Chittagong court on January 18.
The apex court administration sent a letter to the vice chairman of the Bar Council along with newspaper reports on the incident of vandalism for taking necessary action in accordance with Bangladesh Bar Council law, two SC officials requesting anonymity told The Daily Star.
They also said the Bar Council can cancel the certificate of a lawyer, if allegation of misconduct against him or her is found true.
On January 18, agitating lawyers reportedly vandalised a Chittagong court after it rejected a bail petition of their fellow lawyer and his wife in a human trafficking case.
The couple -- Jamal Hossain and his wife Yasmin Akhter -- was arrested at Shah Amanat International Airport on Tuesday in connection with helping two people, including a Rohingya woman, to go to Saudi Arabia with fake Umrah visas.
As the court rejected their bail prayer, the agitating lawyers vandalised the nameplate of the judge, windows of his chamber, ransacked the files at the courtroom and also scuffled with police.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice SK Sinha on January 19 formed a three-member committee led by Supreme Court Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam to probe the incident of vandalism at the Chittagong court.
