Train derails in Gaibandha
The locomotive of Santahar-bound Karotoa Express train derailed near the outer signal of Bonarpara Railway Station at 9:00pm on Tuesday, disrupting rail communication for around four hours on Lalmonirhat-Santahar section.
Assistant Station Master of Bonarpara station Khalilur Rahman said the locomotive of the express train got derailed at the outer signal point and ran about 100 yards over the sleepers before stopping.
At least 15 fear stricken passengers sustained injuries when they jumped from the compartments.
“I was sleeping and woke up when I heard the odd sound of the train bumping on the sleepers near the entrance of Bonarapara station,” said passenger Asgar Ali.
“The accident could have been fatal if the compartments had fallen off the track,” said mechanic Zillur Rahman.
Soon after the incident, workers of Bonarapara loco-shed first shifted all the compartments to the side track and cleared the main track to restore communication.
Sub-Assistant Engineer Abdul Hadi said the train left for its destination with another engine at 1:00am.
The derailed locomotive was put back on the track yesterday.
