Tofail seeks duty, quota-free market access to KL
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today urged Malaysia to give Bangladesh quota and duty-free market access to minimise the trade gap between the two friendly countries.
"Bangladesh imported goods worth US$ 952.30 million from Malaysia against its exports worth US$ 191.16 million in the fiscal year 2015-16. This trade gap can be reduced if Malaysia offers Bangladesh quota and duty-free market access," he said.
The minister said this while meeting with newly appointed Malaysian ambassador Noor Ashikin Mohd Taib at his office in Dhaka.
Tofail Ahmed said many developed countries have been giving Bangladesh quota and duty-free market access.
Malaysia is a big manpower export market for Bangladesh and bilateral trade between the two countries is gradually increasing, he said.
The commerce minister said Bangladeshis have been working in many countries in the world with reputation. If Malaysia relaxes its visa conditions, then more skilled manpower of Bangladesh will get the scope to work in Malaysia, he added.
Senior secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamun of the commerce ministry was present at the meeting.
