A teenage Chakma girl was gang-raped in Kabakhali area under Dighinala upazila of the district on Monday night.
Police yesterday arrested one of the alleged rapists, Mohammad Shahriar Sohel, president of Kabakhali union unit of Chhatra League, following a case filed by the victim's mother against four people with Dighinala Police Station.
Shahadat Hossain Titu, officer in-charge of the police station, quoted victim's family members as saying that a gang of four led by Sohel picked up the girl while she was returning home from a religious function at the upazila headquarters around 11:30pm.
They took her to a nearby tobacco field in Kabakhali area and violated her there, the OC added.
After primary interrogation, the victim was sent to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for medical test.
Meanwhile, in a press release issued yesterday, Iqbal Bahar and Mongsaprue Marma, president and general secretary of BCL district unit, said they decided to permanently expel Kabakhali union unit president Sohel for his alleged involvement in the incident and asked the Dighinala unit to take necessary steps in this regard.
Away in Jamalpur, police arrested an absconding accused in a dowry case from Farajipara village in Bakshiganj upazila of the district on Monday night, reports our correspondent.
The arrestee is Mosharaf Faraji, 34, son of Bodi Faraji of the village.
