A teenage tailor was burnt dead as a fire broke out at a shopping mall in Chittagong city this morning.
Deceased Md Hassan, 17, son of Md Abul Jabbar, worked at a tailor shop on the third floor of Center Plaza located in the Chawbazar area of the city.
The fire originated on the third floor of the market around 8:30am and soon engulfed the other shops on the floor, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting Jashim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defence.
On information, eight firefighting units rushed in and brought the fire under control after a frantic three-hour effort, said Jashim, adding that the origin of the fire could not be determined immediately.
Later, they rescued Hassan and rushed him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
“He stayed back at the shop to work overnight due to the workload for Eid,” said Hassan’s twin brother Hussain who also works in the same shop.
“Of the 180 shops in the building, all the 40 in the third floor have burnt down. The estimate damage would be about 2-2.5crore,” said Jakir Hossain Rubel, general secretary of the store owners’ association of the complex.
“We will form a three-member team of experts to investigate the origin of the fire and the measure the damage it has caused,” fire service official Jashim said.
