Sugarcane farming gets popular in Khagrachhari
Sugarcane cultivation is increasing in the hill district as the crop can withstand drought and flood.
Speakers said this at a workshop held in the the district town yesterday.
Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute (BSRI) organised the workshop titled 'The importance and the potential for production of sugarcane crops and molasses in socio-economic development in Chittagong Hill Tracts.'
Khagrachhari Hill District Council Chairman Kangraji Chowdhury inaugurated the workshop. It was chaired by BSRI's Chief Biotechnology Officer Dr Kuyasha Mahmud. Chief Scientific Officer of Pahari Krishi Gobeshana Kendra in Khagrachhari Munshi Rashid Khan and Agriculture Research Centre Project Director Dr Nurul Alam attended the programme.
The keynote speech was given by Senior Scientific Officer Divakar Chakma.
Divakar said sugarcane cultivation has increased in the district as farmers are getting increasingly interested in farming the drought resistant and flood-tolerant crop. Along with sugarcane, various vegetables can be cultivated as a companion crop, which will help the farmers financially.
Agricultural officials from different upazilas, farmers and agriculturists were present at the workshop.
