Storms damage 3,000 houses in Moulvibazar, Sylhet
Hailstorms coupled with rain swept through three upazilas of Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts on Friday night and early Saturday, damaging over 3,000 thatched and tin-roofed houses and snapping power lines.
In Moulvibazar's Barlekha upazila, storm damaged at least 2,800 houses and uprooted hundreds of trees and telephone and electricity poles.
“Hailstorm accompanied by rain hit the upazila early Saturday. The hailstones were larger than eggs. More than 28,000 houses have been damaged. People of some villages could not move properly because of the damaged houses and fallen trees,” said Rafiqul Islam, chairman of Barlekha Upazila Parishad.
SM Abdullah Al Mamun, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Barlekha, said he has informed the higher authorities of the matter and is making a list of the damaged houses.
In Sylhet, over 300 houses were damaged as hailstorm lashed Fenchuganj and Sadar upazilas early Friday.
The storm accompanied uprooted scores of trees and electricity poles, and damaged standing boro paddy on vast tracts of land.
