Sonaimurir Tek draws tourists
Sonaimurir Tek in Narsingdi, with its abundant greenery and red soil, has been attracting an increasingly larger number of tourists every year.
Situated by the side of Dhaka-Sylhet highway, it is among the top tourist spots in the country.
Sonaimurir Tek, surrounded by six hills in Shibpur upazila of the district, is 65 km from capital Dhaka and 12 km from Narsingdi town.
Vegetables are the main source of income of the farmers of the area. Bitter gourd (korola), beans (shim), lady's finger (dherosh), gourd (lau), sponge gourd (jhinge), pumpkin (kumra),green papaya ( kacha pepe), and arum (kachu) grown there play an important role in meeting the country's demand.
It also has jackfruit trees, olive groves and berry gardens, and various types of herbs grow on the slopes of the hills.
Archaeologists have been conducting research in this area for long. In 1968 a fossilised sheaf of paddy and a trunk of hijol tree were found there. A good number of earthen potteries have been unearthed in Kamartek area. Archaeologists think these date back to 2,500 BC. The area has been marked as an archeologically important spot.
Film directors have long been using this area as shooting spot for films and dramas. Besides, a huge number of tourists visit this area every year. During winter, people go to Sonaimurir Tek for picnic. Calls of various types of birds, including cuckoos and doves, add enchantment to the environment.
Recently, some motels, picnic spots and attractive bungalows have been built by private entrepreneurs on the hill tops. Parjatan Corporation can earn a big amount of revenue by setting up an attractive tourist centre and beautifying the spot.
It will also play an important role in economic development of the country by expanding cottage industries. The area is reputed for its earthenware, and various household articles of bamboo and cane are also made in this area.
Beautiful spots like Sristigarh, Kamartek, Morjal, Jossor Bazar, Joy Mongol and Baghabo surround Sonaimurir Tek.
