Criminals killed an 11-year-old schoolgirl allegedly after rape at Yarpur village in Naldanga upazila of the district on Monday.
The victim, Mayanur Khatun Maya, was a Class V student at Yarpur Government Primary School.
Following a case filed by victim's father Jahurul Islam Manik with Naldanga Police Station, police arrested Mithun Hossain, 23, and Mobarak Hossain Kalu, 23, of the village early yesterday, suspecting their involvement in the incident.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees told police that they picked up the girl during her school hours on Monday noon and took her to an adjacent bush in a bid to rob her gold earrings.
They later violated the girl forcibly, strangled her and fled the scene with the gold rings, said Nazibul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Naldanga Police Station.
According to their confession, police yesterday seized the earrings that were sold to a jewellery shop in Puthia upazila, the OC added.
Victim's family members said Maya went to her school on Monday morning and did not return home. Locals spotted her body around 9:00pm and informed the police.
Police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, local people formed a human chain at the upazila headquarters yesterday morning and demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.
