SC stays bail of sacked BASIC Bank MD
The Supreme Court today stayed till October 31 a High Court verdict that granted bail to sacked deputy managing director of BASIC Bank Fazlus Sobhan in two corruption cases.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order following two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking stay on the HC verdict.
The apex court judge also asked the ACC to file two separate leave to appeals with the SC against the HC verdict by October 31.
ACC’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told Fazlus Sobhan cannot get released from jail following the SC stay order.
On January 8, the ACC arrested Fazlus at the capital's Motijheel in connection with two corruption cases involving Tk 58 crore. The cases were filed by the ACC with Gulshan and Motijheel police stations.
The arrest followed the filing of more than 50 cases by the ACC in September last year against a number of bankers and borrowers linked with the Tk 5,000-crore BASIC Bank scam that took place between 2010 and 2013.
Following two separate bail petitions filed by Fazlus, the HC on September 8 this year granted permanent bail to him in the cases.
