‘Robber’ killed in Narail ‘gunfight’ with cops
The deceased is Mizan Kazi, 38, son of Ratan Kazi in Bahundanga village in the upazila, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
Mizan, a member of an inter-district robber gang, was accused in a dozen of cases including murder, rape and robbery, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kalia Police Station.
Police said Mizan was arrested from a hideout in Gopalganj Saturday evening during a police drive jointly conducted Kalia and Gopalganj police.
When he was being brought to Narail, his cohorts attacked the police van in Balurmath area of Pohordanga village around 2:30am in an attempt to snatch him.
The criminals opened fire on police, forcing them to retaliate with gunfire that triggered a “gunfight”, the OC said.
Mizan was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, he added.
Five police personnel were also injured in the ‘gunfight’, OC Mahbubur said.
Police recovered a rifle, four bullets and two sharp weapons from the scene, the police official added.
