‘Robber’ killed in Laxmipur ‘gunfight’
A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Laxmipur Sadar upazila early today.
The deceased was identified as Russel alias Kala Russel, son of Abdul Karim of Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali district, police said.
He was arrested with a gun, two bullets and 11 yaba tablets from an abandoned house at North Joypur in Sadar upazila on Thursday, said Mokhtar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandraganj Police Station.
Based on information from Russel, police took him to Dattapara and conducted a drive there to recover arms around 2:00am.
Sensing the law enforcers' presence, Russel's associates opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate and triggering the gunfight, the OC said.
At one stage, Russel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while the others managed to flee the scene.
Three policemen were injured during the operation.
Police also recovered a gun, a pistol and nine bullets from the spot.
Russel was wanted in 20 cases including robbery, murder and other criminal cases filed with Chandraganj Police Station, the OC said.
