Robber killed in Kushtia 'gunfight'
An alleged cadre of outlawed Gono Bahihi (GB) was killed in a 'gunfight' with police in Alampur under Sadar upazila of the district last night.
The victim was Amirul Islam, 45, of Ambaria village in Mirpur upazila.
Police said the deceased was a listed robber and second-in-command of notorious GB leader Serajul Islam's 'Seraj Bahini.'
Officer-in-Charge of Detective Branch (DB) of Kushtia Police Sabbirul Islam said, acting on a tip-off that Amirul and seven to eight accomplices were preparing for robbery at Alampur area, police rushed to the spot at about 2:30am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire. A 'gunfight' ensued when police returned fire.
With bullet injuries, Amirul was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the police official said, adding that a firearm and four bullets were recovered from the spot.
Police said Amirul was held with nine firearms on June 16, 2014, and was released from jail on January 17, 2015.
