Robber killed in 'gunfight' with cops
An alleged robber was killed in a 'gunfight' with police in Shashai area under Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Mohabbat Khan, 29, son of late Hanif Khan of Koyarpur village in Nasirnagar upazila of the district.
Four policemen, who sustained injuries during the 'gunfight', were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. They are Sub-inspector Shafiqul Islam and constables Rajab Ali, Sohag Mia and Tariqul Islam.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Ashraf of Bijoynagar Police Station said a police team, acting on a tip-off, cordoned off the area on Dhaka-Sylhet highway where a gang of armed robbers was taking preparation to commit a robbery around 3:30am.
Sensing the presence of the policemen, the gang opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate. Mohabbat sustained bullet injuries while his cohorts managed to flee the scene. He was taken to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered a pipe gun and some machetes from the spot.
Mohabbat was wanted in a number of cases filed with different police stations in the district, the OC added.
