Remove collaborators’ names from structures: HC
The High Court today directed the authorities to remove the names of two collaborators of Pakistan army from a road in Khulna and a university auditorium.
The court said Khan A Sabur Road in Khulna will now be called Jessore Road, as it was previously, and Kushtia Islamic University authorities will rename the Shah Azizur Rahman Auditorium without any delay.
The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the order while hearing a rule issued in this regard in 2012.
Following a writ petition, the HC on May 14, 2012 issued the rule asking the government authorities to explain why the names of Pakistani collaborators should not be removed from the roads and structures across the country and why they should not be directed to rename those roads, buildings and structures after the freedom fighters.
Petitioners’ lawyer AKM Rashedul Huq told The Daily Star that the HC today asked the Khulna City Corporation mayor to withdraw the name of Khan A Sabur Road, but did not mention any specific name for Shah Azizur Rahman Auditorium.
The university authorities will decide in this regard, he said.
Prof Muntasir Mamun of the history department at Dhaka University, and eminent writer Shahriar Kabir filed the writ petition saying that many structures have been named after the leaders of anti-liberation forces at different times after the independence, which is against the spirit of the War of Liberation.
They mentioned that a road in Khulna and an auditorium of Islamic University were named after Khan A Sabur and Shah Azizur Rahman who were the collaborators and leaders of anti-liberation forces.
In the writ petition, Prof Muntasir and Shahriar Kabir sought necessary order upon the government to remove the names of collaborators from the road and structures.
