Reconsider needs before travelling Bangladesh, Australians advised
The Australian government has updated its travel alert in Bangladesh due to the high threat of terrorist attack and the uncertain political situation.
It also increased the advice level from 2 (exercise high degree of caution) to level 3 (reconsider your need to travel).
“Due to increasing in terrorist attacks, including against westerners, we have increased the overall level of advice for Bangladesh to 'reconsider your need to travel',” according to the latest advise issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the government of Australia today.
Australian officials continue to adopt heightened security precautions in Dhaka, and are limiting their movements in public places, the travel advice added.
“If you do decide to travel, take additional security measures, register your travel on Smartraveller and monitor the media and other sources about possible security risks.
There is reliable information to suggest that militants may be planning to target Western interests in Bangladesh,” according to the summery of the latest travel advice.
Most western and major Asian countries have started issuing travel warnings for their citizen following July 1 terror attack at Dhaka café Gulshan-2 in which two police officers and 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners, were brutally killed.
Countries like United States, United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea have also issued similar travel warnings for their citizens living in Bangladesh or wishing to visit.
The US last updated its travel warning on July 10 and it is remain unchanged till yesterday.
The Department of State warns US citizens to consider carefully whether you need to travel to Bangladesh, in light of the latest attack in a series of extremist events.
Effective July 10, 2016, the Department of State authorized the voluntary departure of family members of U.S. government personnel posted to the US Embassy in Dhaka.
“The US government assesses that the terrorist threat is real and credible,” it said.
However, the US Embassy in Dhaka remains open and will provide all routine consular services, it added.
The UK updated its advice on July 7, which also still remains unchanged, asked its citizens to remain vigilant and avoid visiting areas where foreign nationals are known to congregate.
