Rain, excessive heat damage early tomato crop
The farmers in Jamuna basin areas under Sariakandi upazila of the district have been hit hard by the damage caused by the unfavourable weather for tomatoes and tomato plants.
Tomato had been cultivated in all villages of the river basin and char areas, but the farmers were frustrated due to late recession of the flood water and excessive heat, DAE officials said.
The farmers have been cultivating tomato, brinjal, gourd, radish, cauliflower and cabbage in their lands, but now they grow hybrid and early varieties of tomato from the middle of July to ensure good profit.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said vegetables have been cultivated on over 150 hectares of land where around 12 hectares were for tomato. But the incessant rain in the first week of October and temperatures above 28 degrees Celsius damaged the new tomatoes and plants, they added.
Tomato growers of Nayapara said the prolonged floodwater in the vegetable fields and excessive heat in the last two weeks have damaged the crop.
Agriculture officer Md Abdul Halim said the early variety of tomato is profitable for the farmers of the Jamuna basin areas, but rough weather frustrated them a little bit.
