Protect CHT forests to save biodiversity
All concerned should play due role to preserve the forests in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) for saving biodiversity as well as the livelihood of indigenous people, Jyotirindro Bodhipriyo Larma alias Santu Larma, chairman of CHT Regional Council (CHTRC), said as the chief guest at a book launching programme in the hill town yesterday.
Local non-government organisation Hill Flower organised the programme marking launching of the book titled “Biodiversity of Doluchhari Village Common Forest in Rangamati" at CHT Regional Council conference hall around 2:30pm.
"There are about 314 Village Common Forest (VCF) in CHT and most of the indigenous people depend on this. So we should protect it," Thoiaung Marma, president of Chittagong Hill Tracts Village Common Forest Network, said at the programme.
Jyoti Bikash Chakma of Hill Flower delivered the welcome speech at the programme.
Farid Uddin Ahmed, executive director of Aranyak Foundation, Md Mostofa Feeroz, professor of zoology department of Jahangirnagar University, Subarna Chakma, associate executive officer of CHTRC, Md Rafiqul Hasan Mokul, forest officer of Rangamati Circle, spoke at the programme presided over by Nilu Kumar Tanchangya, executive director of Hill Flower.
Speakers urged taking effective steps against illegal logging to save CHT forests.
Karbaris (village headmen) from Doluchhari Para and representatives of different organisations in the town were present at the programme.
