Pre-poll violence leaves 15 hurt in Mymensingh
At least 15 people were injured in a pre-poll clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates in Sohagi union of Iswarganj upazila yesterday.
Elections to 11 union parishads in the upazila are scheduled to be held on April 23. Jatiya Party (JP) candidate Abdul Kader and AL candidate Habibur Rahman are contesting for the post of chairman of Sohagi Union Parishad.
Quoting locals, Md Badrul Alam Khan, officer-in-charge of Ishwarganj Police Station, said JP candidate Abdul Kader and AL candidate Habibur Rahman locked in an altercation at Bhalukber under the union during their electioneering around 11:30am.
They again locked in an altercation in Bogaputa area around 5:00pm. At one stage, the supporters of the chairman aspirants attacked each other with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving at least 15 people from both sides injured.
Of the injured, three were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while the rest to the upazila health complex. Later, Mujibur Rahman, brother of AL candidate Habibur Rahman, was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated, police said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further untoward incident.
