‘Permit to kill patients or arrange treatment’
Feeling helpless to bear the medical costs for his two sons and a grandson, a father in Meherpur today sought permission from the district administration to kill them.
The 55-year old grocer Tofazzel Hossain submitted his application to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district on Thursday seeking medical treatment of his sons and grandson or permission to kill them.
He called upon the DC to choose any of the options in his letter after failing to continue their treatment for the last 14 years, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
Tofazzel said his sons Sabur Hossain, 24, Raihanul Hossain, 13, and grandson Sourav Hossain, 8, have been suffering from ‘Muscular Dystrophy’, a disease with hereditary condition marked by progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles.
Sabur was infected with the disease at the age of 11. His father, Tofazzel took him to India for treatment but physicians then told him it is “not curable”.
Raihanul was infected with the same disease at his 5 while Tofazzel’s grandson Sourav three years ago.
Tofazzel said: “Some physicians of National Institute of Homeopathy in India, however, assured him of partially cure to the disease.”
Sabur is now totally paralysed while Raihanul and Sourav’s conditions remain the same.
“I’ve lost many of my belongings to treat my elder son Sabur for around last 20 years since he’s been infected with,” Tofazzel said in his writing.
Contacted, Meherpur acting DC Khairul Hasan told our local correspondent that he assured the man of doing something for him as much as possible.
Soon after receiving Tofazzel’s application, he went to the house of Tofazzel and talked to him over the issue. “Many people are personally contacting me to extend their help for the man,” the DC said.
He added: “I’ve also asked Tofazzel to open a bank account to meet the medical cost.”
Rasheda Sultana, civil surgeon at Meherpur said that she would form a medical team to examine the three.
