Pabna AL factions clash: 10 injured
At least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League in Santhia bazar area of the district yesterday.
The clash took place between the men of Santhia upazila unit AL Secretary Tapan Hayder Sun and Santhia municipality Mayor Miraz Uddin, former executive member of the unit, over bringing out processions around 12:30pm.
Md Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Santhia Police Station, said a case was filed against Miraz and his men on charge of torching the office of Tapan following a dispute over Zila Parishad election on December 28.
Protesting the case against the mayor, his men brought out a procession yesterday afternoon. At this, supporters of Tapan brought out a counter procession over setting the office on fire.
When both processions reached the upazila headquarters, the rival groups attacked each other with firearms, leaving eight people injured.
Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam, 50, and constable Sohag Mahamud, 30, of the PS, also sustained injuries when they tried to bring the situation under control, said the OC.
Tapan and Marufa Khatun, a passerby, sustained bullet injuries during the incident, he said.
