One killed, 25 hurt in Faridpur
A man was killed and 25 others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers yesterday over a cricket match at Baliachora village in Bhanga upazila.
The deceased is Jamal Sheikh, 38, son of Sohrab Sheikh of the village.
There had been a longstanding rivalry between two groups led by Billal Sheikh and Bakles Harkara of the village over establishing supremacy in the area, police said quoting Kawsar Bhuiyan, chairman of Algi union parishad.
Both the groups locked in a fierce clash yesterday morning as a sequel to an earlier clash over a cricket match among children at a local madrasa playground on Sunday.
They swooped on each other with sharp weapons, leaving 26 people from both sides injured.
Villagers took the injured to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared Jamal Sheikh, a supporter of Bakles, dead around 9:00am.
On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman of Bhanga Police Station said, adding that additional police have been deployed in the area to avert any further incident.
