Nationalise Syed Ahmed College in Bogra
Local people and students and teachers of Syed Ahmed College, a non-government institution, in Sonatola upazila under the district have demanded nationalisation of the college as it has all the facilities similar to that of the government colleges.
They also urged the government to take initiative to educate the next-generation of the poverty stricken people of the Jamuna basin areas in the upazila.
Established in 1970, the institution is the only non-government college in the upazila with Masters' facilities.
In 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman provided a donation of Tk 10,000 to the college fund to build necessary structures on its 49 bighas of land.
Earlier, Syed Ahmed, father of its founder Principal Nazbul Haque, donated a major portion of the land to build the college which is about 20 kilometres away from the district town.
This year, the college achieved 16th position countrywide and was fifth in Rajshahi division for its brilliant results under National University, educational environment and other facilities.
Sources said nearly 8,000 students are studying at HSC, BA (pass), BA (honours) and Masters' levels with 72 teachers. Besides, it has six buses and two micro-buses to provide transport facilities to the students.
Founder Principal Nazbul Haque said local people have been demanding nationalisation for long and we are confident enough to get the nod soon as it has all the infrastructural facilities needed.
On June 30 this year, the government published a short list of 199 colleges to be nationalised, excluding the name of Sayed Ahmed College even though it was included in the previous list of 154 colleges, he added.
Nazbul said Advocate Altaf Hossain, local lawmaker from Bogra 7 constituency, recently submitted a proposal to the national assembly to take necessary steps regarding the nationalisation of the college.
