MP murder: 15 shown arrested under Section 54
Police today showed 15 detainees arrested under Section 54 and detained eight more persons for quizzing over murder of lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton.
Those shown arrested were among the 18 who were detained earlier for interrogation. But police could not obtain information from them, our local correspondent reports.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sundarganj Police Station, Atiar Rahman, confirmed the development and said police will appeal to the court later for remanding them.
Meanwhile, the OC also confirmed of detaining eight more people, mostly activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir, for interrogation.
Deputy Inspector General of Rangpur Range police Khandker Golam Faruq said investigation into the murder is underway focusing on involvement of Jamaat-Shibir, intra-party feud and militancy.
Just two days ago, the local lawmaker of Gaibandha-1 constituency, was shot dead by assailants inside his own home. Though a case has been filed, police are yet to make any arrest in this regard.
Ruling Awami League has primarily blamed sectarian forces for the killing.
