Move to scrap licenses of 200 internet providers
Bangladesh’s telecom regulator will scrap licenses of 204 internet providers as they allegedly failed to provide operational documents to it after frequent requests.
The letter was issued today. Copies of the letter have been sent to the Internet Service Providers concerned. The Daily Star has obtained a copy of the letter.
Deputy director of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s (BTRC) operation division signed the letter. The order has been effectuated from August 25.
By this time, the companies can validate their existence by coming up with proper documents.
ISP Association President MA Hakim acknowledged the receipt of the letter. He said: “Most of these defaulter ISPs are out of business for a long time.”
Among the providers are 33 who provide internet nationwide and 23 from central zone. All international gateway operators have been instructed to stop issuing bandwidth for them.
The regulator will also take action against these defaulters as per the telecom act.
Earlier in 2015, licenses of 63 internet providers were scrapped in two different initiatives.
