Mir Quasem verdict: SC starts hearing on review petition
The Supreme Court today started hearing on the petition of convicted war criminal Mir Quasem Ali seeking review of its verdict upholding death penalty for him.
After a brief hearing, a five-member bench of the Appellate Division head by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed Sunday (August 28) for resuming the hearing.
Quasim's lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain placed a short argument on the petition before the apex court.
Earlier in the day, the SC rejected a petition of Quasem seeking a three-week deferment of the hearing.
On November 2, 2014, International Crimes Tribunal-2 handed down the capital punishment over crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
The Appellate Division upheld the verdict on March 8 this year and released the full text on June 6, hours after which ICT issued a death warrant.
