UP member arrested for ‘locking school’ in Mymensingh
A ward-level member of Hobirbari union in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission today as he allegedly locked a primary school for one and a half months for not getting speed money from the contractor who built the institution.
Arrestee Rafiqul Islam Ismail, a member of ward no.1 of the union parishad, was arrested in Bhaluka around 2:00pm, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, public relation officer of the ACC, told The Daily Star.
He padlocked Gangatia Educo Skikhhalaya, for one and a half months ago for realising the money from the construction firm based in Dhaka.
According to the school and local sources, Rafiqul locked the school claiming contractor Sheikh International in Dhaka owed him money.
The school has 175 students from pre-primary to class-V and is run by Education and Development Foundation, a Spanish NGO.
The sources said the school building was constructed at a cost of Tk 70 lakh and the contractor handed over the building to the authorities concerned on August 10.
ATM Rafiqul Islam, coordinator of Education and Development Foundation in Mymensingh, said the union parishad member went to the school the same day and claimed Tk 2 lakh.
