Meagre relief for flood-hit people in Netrakona
Flood-hit people in Netrakona's Khaliajury and Mohanganj upazilas are not getting sufficient relief.
The situation will worsen further in Khaliajury when the stock of comparatively affluent farmers will run out within a month, said Nazim Uddin Sarker, chairman of Krishnapur Union Parishad (UP).
The relief has also been a far cry for flood victims of remote areas 10 to 15 kilometers away from the upazila headquartres as they cannot reach the distribution points for relief, said Chakua UP Chairman Abul Kalam Azad.
They urged the local administration to open OMS centres at ward level to bring the flood victims under relief network.
“I need around 50 tonnes of rice for 5200 flood-affected families in the union but I got 11:50 tonnes in the last 15 days,” said the chairman.
Ninety tonnes of rice and Tk 6,30,000 have been distributed among the flood-hit people so far, said Mohammed Tofael Ahmed, Khaliajury upazila nirbahi officer (UNO).
Three OMS centres have been opened at the upazila headquarters since Sunday and every centre has an allotment of one tonne of rice and one tonne of wheat per day, he said.
Higher authorities have been urged to take immediate steps for VGF (vulnerable group feeding) and rice meant for poor people at Tk 10 per kg but the programme is yet to be started, said the UNO.
Mohanganj UNO Nizam Uddin Ahmed said a government relief of 66 tonnes of rice and Tk 10, 00000 have been distributed among the flood victims so far.
Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, district fisheries officer, said some 16000 fishermen families are now in deep crisis due to the flashflood and they need immediate relief support.
Agriculture also faced a serious loss in the early flood that submerged 48670 out of 184,320 hectares of land with nearly ripe boro paddy in eight upazilas, said an agriculture officer.
