Mayor aspirants pledge to accept people's verdict
Ten candidates for the posts of mayor of Chapainawabganj and Muktagachha municipalities have pledged to fight corruption and improve civic amenities, if elected in the upcoming polls.
Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reported that five out of six candidates for the post of mayor of Chapainawabganj municipality vowed to make the municipality corruption-free and take up programme to improve civic amenities.
They made the pledge at a face to face programme with voters organised by Sachetan Nagorik Committee (SANAC), a unit of Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB), at the playground of Chapainawabagnj Government College yesterday afternoon.
The candidates who attended the programme are Samiul Haque Liton of Awami League, Ataur Rahman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Moniruzzaman Monir of Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (Inu), Shahjahan Ali of Jatiya Party, and Abdul Matin, a rebel candidate of BNP and also present mayor.
Nazrul Islam, ameer of district unit of Jamaat, who is contesting as an independent candidate, did not attend the programme.
All the five candidates promised to fulfill their election pledges, if voted to power, and work together for the development of the municipality. They also promised to accept people's verdict in the election.
The mayor candidates also vowed to ensure supply of safe drinking water and development of drainage system and roads.
Selina Begum, president of SANAC of Chapainawabganj unit, presided over the programme while NSM Mahbubur Rahman, member of SNC conducted the programme.
Among others, SANAC members Raihanul Islam Luna, Gouri Chand Barman Situ, Golam Farukh Mithun, and Shafiqul Islam, area manager of TIB Chapainawabganj unit, were present.
Our Mymensingh correspondent adds: Five mayor aspirants have taken oath to root out corruption and provide better civic amenities for the people of Muktagachha municipality, if elected.
SANAC Muktagachaa upazila unit organised the programme at RK High School ground on Tuesday evening.
The candidates, who took oath, are Abdul Hye Akanda of Awami League (AL), Shahidul Islam Shahid of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Ataur Rahman Lenin of Jatiyo Party (Ershad), Shariful Islam Biplob of Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and Debashish Ghosh Bappi (AL rebel).
The candidates also pledged to improve civic amenities, including smooth supply of safe drinking water and proper drainage system, to make the municipality more livable.
They also told the gathering that they will accept the voters' verdict and will join hands with the elected mayor for all-out development of the municipality.
“We will prevent all sorts of anti-social activities in the area, and provide more facilities for children and women,” the mayoral aspirants said.
Presided over by SANAC President Principal Ekhlasur Rahman Jewel, the programme was also attended, among others, by the Chairman of Muktagachha Upazila Parishad SM Zakaria Harun, Headmaster of RK High School Md Nazrul Islam, Muktijoddha Commander Abul Kashem and business leader Shyamol Chandra Saha.
Principal Swapon Das, ex-SANAC president conducted the programme.
